Leather Strop Board 400x75 'Soft'

Now you can find a double-sided soft strop. We use 2,2 mm thick Italian brown leather on one side and natural 'suede' on the other. In between is thick birch plywood. It does not bend, and the board has a myriad of uses. It will stay steady in place on the table.

This leather is so-called "soft" hardness on the manufacturer's scale of 2/6 and gives an excellent response. The suede side is very tight to the touch and works well for direct stropping.

My method is to put the board in a diagonal position, one end lower on the table and the other in my hand. I move the knife back and forth a few dozen times, and the blade is diamond-sharp.

You can enhance the use of strop with pastes. For example, Luxor's red paste gives you a roughness of 2500-3000, which is almost perfect for finishing knife blades.

What is the difference between Soft and Medium leather?

Both leathers achieve the same result, but what are the other differences?

SOFT leather has a tacky feel, providing natural feedback to the knife. This makes maintaining the knife's angle easier and keeps stropping more controlled. SOFT leather is coarser than MEDIUM leather. So, if you're working with just leather without pastes, this is something to consider.

MEDIUM leather is stiff and slippery, somewhat numb to the touch. However, knives tend to shed metal onto the surface of the leather, so after a short period of use, the shiny smoothness disappears, and the leather starts to feel tacky.

Leather is a consumable, but it will not wear out. This means that MEDIUM does not last any longer in use than SOFT. You must be careful while knife stropping. From my experience, I know that the knife's tip quickly leaves cut marks in high-speed stropping. So please be patient while stropping.
