NOTE!

This whetstone is a so-called semi-soaking stone. It works best after 5-10 minutes of soaking. Do not store the stone in a basin of water. After sharpening, immediately wipe the stone clean with a towel. This will give the stone a clean look and start the drying process. Place the stone to dry in a position where it does not touch a solid surface. For example, place the stone on top of a pencil. Allow the stone to dry slowly, without additional heating. Do not place the stone in direct sunlight. Do not allow the stone to freeze when wet. It takes more than 24 hours to dry. Store the stone protected from dents, for example, in its box.

The finish of the stone when delivered, is much coarser than a 1.000 grit. In order to get to a 1.000 grit state, the stone will need to be used a couple of times (5+) or be lapped with silicon carbide (SiC) grit. I used a progression of 80 - 120 - 220 - 400 SiC grit on a glass plate to get the stone to a 1.000 grit finish (SiC grit gets smaller quickly when lapping so there is no need to go up to 1000 grit). The stone is very hard and does not release abrasive easily. The result is that it will load up quite quickly and will need to be re-lapped after 5-10 knives. I use it as a finishing stone for often used kitchen knives, such as parers. The size makes it very handy for smallish knives. As an experiment, I lapped one side of the stone with 120 grit SiC to get it back to the finish it arrived in (I estimate about 400 grit coarseness). In that way I have a dual grit stone where the coarse side can remove metal reasonably quickly and the other side is fine enough to finish basic-use kitchen knives on. If you are willing to put some work in it, this can be a versatile little stone for a low price. If you are new to the sharpening game or you expect a 1.000 grit finish out of the box, I would look for another stone (in the Imanishi range for example).
