Naniwa's "Dressing Stone," also known as a 'Nagura,' has two important functions, which are described in the video below.
1. The stone is designed for cleaning all types of whetstones. When you rub the Nagura stone on the surface of the whetstone, dirt and impurities are removed from the whetstone, while a clay-like substance is released from the Nagura's surface.
2. Many coarser stones tend to clog up with softer metals. By rubbing the dressing stone on the surface of the whetstone before starting sharpening, a clay-like layer is formed, helping to prevent possible glazing.
The dressing stone should be soaked thoroughly before use. You can also store it in water continuously.

Nice dressing stone. Works well on most synthetics.
