This Matsunaga rust eraser set includes all three grits of the Sabi Clear S series. With these you can tackle rust, patina and stubborn stains, from light surface rust to more severe cases, and work from coarse to fine just like with whetstones.
This flexible abrasive rubber is commonly known as a “rust eraser”, and the name says it all: rub it like an eraser and the rust comes off. The abrasive blended into the rubber effectively removes surface rust and patina, and by working over the entire blade you get a more even, cleaner-looking finish.
Three grits, one sequence
Start with coarse #80 when there is a lot of rust or residue. Then move on to medium #120, which removes the marks left by the coarse grit and is also the most versatile grit in the series. Finally, finish with fine #240, which leaves the cleanest finish and is also suitable for dulling scratches. For light surface rust, medium or fine alone is often enough.
For cleaning whetstones
Perhaps the best feature of these rust erasers: they clean the surface of a whetstone incredibly quickly, even in seconds. Wet the stone, rub the surface and rinse, and the stone is ready to use again. Note that the rust eraser does not flatten the stone; it removes metal and dirt that have built up on the surface.
Uses
Instructions
Rub the surface to be cleaned as you would with an eraser. Works dry or wet, but is most effective when used with water. You can cut the piece to any shape or size, for example to reach tight spots.
