RockStar

Shapton RockStar is a new series introduced at the end of 2023, sharing many similarities with the Shapton Glass series. Both stones are made from exceptionally high-quality (WA) white aluminum oxide, and they use the same bonding agent. Shapton has not clarified whether the RockStar stone is the same as the Glass series stone or if there are any differences. Rumor has it that the Glass series may be discontinued, but I don't believe this yet.

One significant difference between the series is the thickness of the stones. RockStar stones are 10 mm thick, whereas the Glass series stones are 5 mm thick and bonded to a glass base. All the RockStar stones I measured were at least 11 mm thick, so there is some variation from the stated dimensions.

The Shapton RockStar series is known for its consistent quality. All the stones have a similar feel, with only the grit varying. This is a notable difference from the Shapton Kuromaku series, where there are significant differences in feel between the stones.

The RockStar stone is a Splash-n-Go stone, requiring only a small amount of water to start sharpening. However, you can also soak it for 5 minutes to slightly soften the surface, making it more pleasant to use. This helps eliminate the minor negative feel of a hard stone. Do not soak the stone for extended periods.

A new, unused RockStar stone has a rough surface layer that should be removed. A light swipe with a flattening stone is sufficient.

Features:
  • High-quality (WA) white aluminum oxide
  • Consistent feel across all grits
  • 10 mm thickness (often at least 11 mm)
  • Splash-n-Go usage, with an optional short soak
  • Light surface preparation is recommended before use
The Shapton RockStar series offers excellent quality and usability, making it an ideal choice for both beginners and experienced sharpeners.
