RockStar

Shapton RockStar is a new series announced at the end of 2023, which has many similarities with the Shapton Glass series. Both stones are made from the same exceptionally high-quality (WA) white aluminum oxide, and the binder is also the same. Shapton itself does not elaborate further; whether the stone is the same as the Glass series or differs somehow. Rumor has it that the Glass series might be discontinued, but I don't believe this yet.

However, the significant difference between the series is that these stones are 10mm thick. In the Glass series, the stone's thickness is 5mm attached to the glass surface. However, all the RockStar stones I measured were at least 11mm, so there is some difference in the given dimensions.

As a series, Shapton RockStar is very consistent. That is to say, all stones feel the same, only the coarseness varies. This is a significant departure from Shapton's Kuromaku series, where there are significant differences in feel between the stones.

The RockStar stone is a Splash-n-Go stone, meaning just a little water and off you go, but you can also soak it for 5 minutes and thus get a slightly softer surface and more pleasant usability. This removes the slight negative feeling of a hard stone. However, do not leave the stone underwater for longer periods.

In a new unused RockStar stone, there is a slightly rough surface layer that should be removed. A light swipe on a leveling stone is sufficient.
