The Suehiro Debado LD-21 #180 is maybe the best whetstone i have ever had! I'm very particular about coarse whetstones, because the rough work is the most important part of any sharpening, especially when it comes to fixing chipped edges or straight beveling. A lot of people think that they don't need a coarser stone, than a 400 grit, until they came to the conclusion that a heavily chipped edge won't be fixed that easily, after 5-6 hour of suffering on a single stone, especially for a beginner, when is learning how to sharpen. That's because most of them start to sharpen their knives, which in the most cases are with a heavily chipped edge and expecting that a 1000 grit whetstone, would fix this. So to be clear, do NOT start with a medium stone, when you are sharpening for the first time! As for the 400 grit as a first stone, i would say that it's a good choice for a beginner, who is not confident enough to start with a coarser grit. But, eventually, they will understand, how big is the advantage of having a stone in the very coarse range, like #200 and below. It's just much easier and faster, plus your whetstone won't wear out that much, compared to a 400 grit. Unfortanetly though, they're not many rough grinding stones, which can be considered as good. And that's, because most of them are soft soaking stones, which absorb water like a sponge and releasing a lot of abrasive material, which can be quite messy. On the other hand there're stones that are too hard for their grit rating, like the Shapton Pro 120, which would seem as the best coarse stone for hand sharpening at first, but that's not the case, because the hardness of it makes it unefficient for it's grit rating and doesn't release enough slurry, which in the end is important for rough grinding. By the way a really important note is that the surface of the stone is especially important, because the rougher it is, the more power you get and for that i'd recommend you to get a flattening SiC stone with grit rating relative to the whetstone you are using or coarser, which for me, does a really good job at resurfacing coarse stones. Even with that in mind, the Shapton Pro 120 is not that fast and it doesn't feel really good, when you are sharpening on it, in my opinion. Lastly, if we're talking about diamond plates, i would say that they're good, but only if you want to remove chips from the cutting edge and using them solely for their ability to stay always flat and being clean at the same time, without caring too much about feedback. However, if we're talking about setting bevels and good feedback, that's a totally different story. If you know what hydroplaning is, you'll understand what i mean. Plus, they tend to wear out kind of fast, for some reason, when sharpening. Maybe, because the sharpest edge of the diamond is rounding over too much. So, after all my long explanations, i wanted to say that it's hard to find a good coarse stone or tool for hand sharpening. But the Suehiro Debado LD-21 #180 is meeting all of my expectations and even exceeding them, because of how good it is! Fast cutting, excellent feedback, slow wearing (for such roughness), splash & go and very balanced. It's not too hard and it's not too soft. It raises good amount of slurry, which is not too much to be messy, but it's enough to do the job perfectly! And, because it's made of GC it's very aggressive, so you have to be careful not overdoing the grinding of whatever you're going to work on. As for the price, even though it's more expensive than other rough stones, i would say that it's worth it, because of how good it is. My recommandation, for this stone, is to use it with a resurfacer, like the Hiomakivi's #180 or maybe the Suehiro #100 (which i don't have it, so i can't speak for it), because as i said earlier, a rough surface for the rough stones = better efficiency and performance. The reason why i don't highlight the Atoma #140 (which i have it) is that when you are flattening the Suehiro #180, you will get a relatively good surface, but overtime the diamond plate will wear out a little and that would affect the surface of the stone negatively, by making it a little bit too fine. That could cause the glazing effect, resulting in a more slippery and unefficient surface, so keep that in mind. Overall i'm happy with this stone and also i'm glad, that i was able to find this online store, because there're so many stones, that i can't find in any other store, except in Hiomakivi! Thank you, Sami!

Kunnioitustaherättävän kokoinen laatta kun vertaa aiempaan Haidun 180 pikkukiveen. Hiekkainen tuntuma ja kivestä irtoaa hiovaa materiaalia hyvin pian. Tehokas ja mukava käyttää. Puree hyvin perus puukkoihin yms mitä ensikokeilin, eikö tarvitse kovasti painetta. Iso koko on kyllä hyvä.

Interesting stone with a very pleasant feel to it. However, you don't need it for your every day knife sharpening. The stone is on the softer side, and does dish out easily. I used it for secondary bevel flattening of my kitchen knives and have mixed feelings, as I feel that the slurrying nature of the stone actually doesn't help with grinding the steel. At the same time, the tactile feeling is amazing, and it works very good for primary bevel grinding.

Hieman pettymys, ei oikein pysty kovempaan teräkseen, esim verrattuna naniwa 400, joka on turhan hieno korjausteroitukseen

Erinomainen karkea kivi. Tällä on hyvä aloittaa enemmän työstöä vaativien kohteiden teroitus. Valmista syntyy.

Ostin kiven katanan karkeahiontaa varten. Olen valmistanut katanan aivan alusta asti. Ei ole kovin perinteisesti valmistettu, koska nauhahiomakonetta on käytetty. Teräskin on modernia dhn7 (aisi 1075) hiiliterästä eikä tamahaganea. Katana oli nauhalla hiomisen jälkeen lähes lopullisessa muodossaan, minkä jälkeen päätin alkaa hioa ja teroittaa katanaa kivillä. LD-21 on ehdottomasti paras karkea kivi, mitä olen kokeillu. Katana on nyt lähes kokonaan hiottu kivellä. Kivi kului vain noin 1,5 mm koko prosessissa. Alun perin en olisi uskonut minkään karkean kiven kuluvan noin vähän käytössä. Lisäksi kivi on aivan uskomattoman nopea.

Finding an efficient coarse stone is far from easy: some make more scratches than abrading steel. Not this one! I would suggest a short soaking and the use of the cleaning stone to raise a little slurry. Add a little water again, and start. I found the feeling it delivers very pleasant, and that isn't what I normally experience with stones that coarse.

This is the best coarse stone. It is a splash&go, cuts fast, cuts well high carbon steels, harder than most stones in this grit range (except Shapton HR, HC) Overall good value for the price!

Todella tehokas ja tunnokas karkea kivi. Ainoana huonona puolena nopea kuluminen

Coarse whetstones are a category often overlooked or underestimated by the beginner who starts out with 1000 grit and dreams of the keen edge and shiny finish produced by the legendary 8000s, such as the Snowwhite or Kitayama. But once you become serious about sharpening you'll realise that you need them more often than you first thought, spend more time with them, and are well advised to have a good arsenal of these guys - who after all do all the dirty work of the business: repairing nicks and chips and broken tips, resetting a bevel or stabilising the blade of single-bevel knives. - Whether the LD-21 is the best rough stone there is I wouldn't know as there are still a lot of the bunch I haven't got round to trying out. However, it is definitely one of the more sophisticated stones in this category: super-fast, very precise, absolutely no-nonsense. This stone knows its job. A joy to work with - but very dangerous! Please make sure that you know what you're doing because there is no happy push-pulling around on this one. It has the power to ruin your knife in no time. But once you feel confident enough for going below 400, look no further because this IS great! Ten out of ten performance on every steel from CrMo to HSS. A beast. And splash&go by the way. - Follow up with a 400 like the Naniwa Pro or Imanishi WZ - and go anywhere you want to go from there.

Lovely hard stone, that does not laod up and dish too fast. Maybe a little bit finer, than 180 but that by much. Whats not to like? May be the best coarse stone! Great stone size and price

Hyvä kivi, tällä voi oikeasti työstää terää eikä mene kamalasti aikaa. Olisi aikoinaan pitänyt heti ostaa, eikä kokeilla halpaa vaihtoehtoa.

I guess this is one of the best buys in the very coarse range. It's not cheap but then it's quiet big and it could handle the thinning of one of my stainless clad knives. Shapton Glass 120/220 and Pro 120 couldn't. The Debado is way faster. It's splash and go but because of the coarseness it will take in quite some water. The feel on the stone is very fine for 180 grit. The size is great for thinning but for that you'll have to keep it flat from time to time. As all coarse stones it's on the softer side. But it keeps cutting and will not clogg up.

Ensikokeilun perusteella erittäin tehokas kivi terän lohkeamien korjaamiseen. Ei moitittavaa.

This is stone I use a lot, super balanced coarse stone, not too hard, not too soft. Keep grinding. Very good price here for that stone.
