If you want more feel and feedback in your sharpening, this set was made for you.
Tanaka Toishi is a series from a Kyoto-based maker with deep roots in natural stones – and it shows. These synthetic stones don't feel hard and clinical; instead, they have a clear liveliness, feedback, and sense of engagement. The set is ideal for the sharpener who already has the basics down and wants more from their stones than pure aggressive cutting.
The set covers the full sharpening progression: 320 for edge setting and repair, 1000 for primary sharpening, and 3000 for finishing. The stones form a fine slurry easily, keeping the work controlled and consistent throughout. The result on these stones is a smooth, hazy shine.
Set includes:
NOTE!
This whetstone is a so-called soaking stone. It works best after 20-30 minutes of soaking. After sharpening, immediately wipe the stone clean with a towel. This will give the stone a clean look and start the drying process. Place the stone to dry in a position where it does not touch a solid surface. For example, place the stone on top of a pencil. Allow the stone to dry slowly without additional heating. Do not place the stone in direct sunlight. Do not allow the stone to freeze when wet. It takes more than 24 hours to dry. Store the stone protected from dents, e.g., in its box.
