Hiomakivi Pack V4 – an updated classic

I’ve long been searching for the best possible balance between price and quality when creating a Hiomakivi Pack suitable for beginners and home users. It hasn’t been an easy task.

With whetstones, efficiency, comfort, and durability often go hand in hand with price. Cheap stones can be soft and clog easily, while overly hard stones tend to feel uncomfortable and unforgiving. This time, however, I’ve managed to create a set that finds a good middle ground – and works well there.

This is already the fourth version of the set.
Hiomakivi Pack V4 is a clear update to the previous V3 Large model. I’ve been working with Chinese whetstone manufacturers for several years now, and over time the collaboration has developed to the point where my own needs and feedback are truly being heard. Although I often criticize low-cost “Temu stones” and other mass-produced items from China, it must be said that you can get high-quality products from there – if you know what to ask for.

These stones have enough cutting power for European kitchen knives, and they also work with slightly harder steels.
One of the biggest improvements in this V4 set is that the stones are now made to the standard size (210×70 mm). The few millimeters missing from the previous model may sound minor, but in practice they make a big difference. A wider stone makes the sharpening stroke more stable, and for beginners especially, it adds a lot of control and confidence.

Another important upgrade is the improved 400-grit stone. While the raw performance hasn’t changed dramatically, the sharpening feel has. The stone doesn’t clog as easily, and the feedback is smoother and more consistent. In my own tests, this has been a noticeable step forward.

Many customers have requested storage cases for the stones – and now they’re included. The flattening stone is still without a case, but perhaps some improvements should be left for the next version. The cases now come with grippy rubber feet, making a separate holder unnecessary. This also helped keep the overall price down, which is a nice bonus.

Hiomakivi Pack V4 comes in a clean, sturdy box that also works perfectly as a gift box if needed.
