The Morihei series, made from natural stone powder, is widely regarded as one of the best options for carbon steel. These Splash-n-Go stones require only minimal water to function efficiently. They are ready to use after a quick soak and a surface rub with a flattening stone, which immediately produces a usable slurry. Morihei stones are classified as medium-hard and offer an exceptionally pleasant feel for both sharpening and polishing.
This set includes not only the #1000 stone but also my personal favorite – the #4000 stone, which truly highlights what this series is all about. Also included is the large Suehiro #280 flattening stone, ideal for both surface prep and maintenance. For stability during sharpening, the set comes with a trusted Naniwa stone holder.
You can expand this set with a coarser stone such as the Morihei #500, which performs excellently for restoring challenging blades like the Roselli UHC puukko – as shown in the video below. I’ve also heard of successful use cases for sharpening carbon steel chisels. For finishing and razors, the legendary MORIHEI “Karasu” #9000 from the same series is highly recommended.
NOTE!
"Splash-and-Go" stones do not tolerate prolonged storage in water. Use water only as much as the stone requires. Do not submerge the stones in a water basin. After sharpening, immediately wipe the stone clean with a towel. This keeps the stone looking tidy and initiates the drying process. Place the stone where it does not touch a solid surface. Let the stone dry horizontally, for example, by placing it over a pen. Allow the stone to dry slowly and peacefully without additional heating. Do not expose the stone directly to sunlight, and do not let the stone freeze while damp. The drying process takes more than a day. Store the stone protected from impacts, for example, in its box without the possible original foam padding. Please do not put the stone in a plastic bag while still damp.
